Today, instead of history, and rather abruptly, I'd like to introduce a special exhibition that I recently visited and was deeply impressed by: "Blown Glass: Exquisite Forms, Masterful Techniques," held from April 22nd to June 25th at the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo Midtown Roppongi.
The Suntory Museum of Art began collecting art at the same time it was established, and with "Beauty in Life" as its core philosophy, it has been enriching its collection alongside its exhibition activities. Currently, it houses approximately 3,000 works, ranging from ancient Japanese art such as paintings, ceramics, lacquerware, and textiles, to glass from both East and West. This special exhibition focuses specifically on blown glass, introducing its history and techniques. What's particularly noteworthy is the extremely high level of glass manufacturing technology in the Edo period and the fact that you can actually see the many works created with this technology, along with their explanations.
The indigo-colored "chiro" shown here, in particular, is difficult to reproduce even with modern technology.
